Why listening is a leadership lever
Most leadership training focuses on what to say. Transformational coaching starts earlier: how you receive what others are signaling—tone, pace, hesitation, and what is left unsaid.
Three listening modes to practice this week
- Outcome listening — What result is this person protecting, even if their words sound defensive?
- Emotion listening — Name the feeling tentatively: “It sounds like this landed as pressure, not support.”
- Pattern listening — Where does this conversation rhyme with earlier ones on the team?
You do not need agreement to create clarity. You need enough accuracy that people feel seen.
A five-minute ritual after difficult meetings
- What did I assume before I asked a second question?
- Where did I rush to fix instead of understand?
- What one sentence would I repeat if this conversation happened again tomorrow?
When leaders practice this consistently, teams report the same outcomes: fewer escalations, faster decisions, and more honest feedback upward.
